Bristol’s EQ building has become the first building in the world to achieve SmartScore certification. The news follows the launch of SmartScore earlier this year, which saw 70 buildings from 7 countries commit to enabling a more collaborative, innovative and dynamic future.
Owned and managed by CEG, and situated in the heart of the city,
the 200,000 sq ft office building has achieved SmartScore Gold.
Nick Lee, Development Director at CEG, said: “Working alongside WiredScore and Buro Happold to achieve this landmark SmartScore certification is fantastic for CEG and Bristol. The exceptional design of EQ and the technological prowess it embraces responds to the step change in the way people are working and occupying space. This drive to meet our customers’ needs now, and in the future, has delivered a global benchmark in one of the UK’s most exciting cities.”
Upon completion in early 2023, EQ will offer the next generation of office buildings in the Bristol market. The visionary, state-of-the-art space will integrate the practical demands of modern businesses, with the desire to live and work sustainably all by placing technology at its core.
SmartScore is the global certification for smart buildings, championing cutting edge technology in real estate. Providing a global standard, SmartScore identifies best in class smart buildings that deliver an exceptional user experience, drive cost efficiency, meet high standards of sustainability and are fully future-proof.
Quote from Tom McClellan, Country Director, UK & Ireland, WiredScore: “Securing the first global SmartScore certification is a landmark achievement for CEG and the wider industry and, in doing so, demonstrates its commitment to the future of an ever-changing real estate landscape. Smart buildings will play a key role in creating more attractive, efficient and sustainable workplaces that allow individual productivity to flourish and where people can meet and collaborate. As we move closer to a return to workspaces, ensuring tenants are benefiting from the best possible working environments will be paramount to maintaining the dynamism of our cities.”
EQ is also certified WiredScore Platinum and comprises one of 20 WiredScore certified buildings owned by CEG.
Quote from Tom Hopton, Digital Building Consultant, Buro Happold: “We are immensely proud to be the first to achieve certification under SmartScore. Working with forward thinking clients like CEG means we are able to set and execute a strategy that delivers a truly smart building, it’s a building that delivers tangible value to all the project stakeholders from investors, developers, tenants, end users, and all the backstage operations that create a modern, service first, and agile workplace.
“I applaud SmartScore for setting a standard that will help our industry, our clients and end users to cut through the noise and confusion around smart buildings. The evidence submission was straightforward, the smart score team extremely helpful, and I was just delighted to hear that we had achieved the first global certification.”

About WiredScore
WiredScore is the organization behind the WiredScore and SmartScore certifications: the internationally recognised digital connectivity and smart building rating systems for real estate, helping landlords design and promote buildings with powerful digital connectivity and smart capabilities. WiredScore was founded in New York in 2013 by leaders in real estate, technology and telecommunications, with an endorsement from Mayor Bloomberg, to improve the city’s technology infrastructure, and support its entrepreneurs who are driving technological advances and creating jobs.
Following success in the US, WiredScore launched in the United Kingdom in October 2015 after winning the Greater London Authority’s tender to be the official Mayor of London Digital Connectivity Rating Scheme. International demand for the digital connectivity rating system has since seen the company expand operations to France, Ireland, Germany, and Canada. Since then, over 750 million square feet of commercial and residential space has been committed to WiredScore certification, impacting 7 million people across 12 countries.
