AP Story

We spoke to Stefan Wings to see how he has been using his WiredScore & SmartScore AP status in the German market since being accredited. Read on to find out what his training experience was like, and how he’s using SmartScore and WiredScore to help clients ensure their buildings are sustainable, future-proofed and digitally connected.

What led you to join WiredScore’s Accredited Professional Program?

I decided to become an Accredited Professional because of the value that the WiredScore and SmartScore certification can add to the market and my projects. On the one hand, it’s fun that as an AP I can get involved in new projects and gain insight into all areas of a building I’m unfamiliar with through the multi-layered criteria. On the other hand, as a WiredScore AP, I can also support my existing clients in projects that are already underway in terms of certification. This is particularly exciting, because although I already know every detail of these projects in advance, the certification gives me a different perspective on the building in question.

What key learnings have you taken away as part of your WiredScore and SmartScore training?

The training is a good preparation for the execution of the certifications of a real building. The fact that the training is underpinned with best-practice examples from real projects means that practical relevance is established at an early stage.

The training confirmed my belief that to future-proof real estate and achieve an excellent experience for occupiers, it is particularly important to act with foresight to optimize the building’s operating processes. I found that WiredScore certification places a particular emphasis on the concepts and structural requirements of a building, which are agreed years before completion and yet have an ongoing and major impact on the operation and safety of the building.

How are you using your WiredScore and SmartScore accreditations to make a difference for your clients?

As a consultant for Customized Smart Buildings at Drees & Sommer, I design and manage innovative construction and real estate projects for which certification brings great added value.

For example...

I have worked on ANH Hausbesitz’s The Terrace since 2019, leading the conceptual design and implementation of its smart building features. As part of my work on The Terrace, I delivered both SmartScore and WiredScore certifications. I’m exceptionally proud with the outcome of these certifications.

As a result of the forward thinking design work c by Drees & Sommer, The Terrace achieved WiredScore Gold and SmartScore Platinum ratings – the latter with the maximum score of 100 out of 100 credits, which only one other building in the world has achieved.

This outcome confirmed the future-looking principles of Drees & Sommer’s design experts and enabled us to deliver a building to the client that will provide an exceptional occupier experience for users long into the future.

[the] sustainable approach is also reflected in the two certifications; WiredScore and SmartScore

How do your WiredScore and SmartScore accreditations support your efforts to focus on sustainability in building design and management?

In addition to digitization, sustainability and future readiness are becoming increasingly relevant in my area of responsibility. This sustainable approach is also reflected in the two certifications WiredScore and SmartScore, which suits my role as AP in the certification processes.

Which innovations most excite you about the future of technology in real estate?

The market is undergoing a real transformation with many innovations that no one could have thought of just a few years ago. PropTech startups are springing up everywhere, revolutionizing the previously rather rigid construction and real estate industry and, above all, developing it with an eye to the future. I find the innovations that streamline, automate and optimize the processes in the operation of a building particularly exciting, because the long operating phase of a building offers very great leverage for the implementation of innovations.

How has joining WiredScore’s Accredited Professional program helped you develop professionally?

The WiredScore Accredited Professional Program and the certifications have given me many insights and new views that help me in my day-to-day project business. In addition, they offer me the opportunity to transfer new ideas and approaches to ongoing projects.
